Helen Thompson (Ph.D. Duke; M.A. Johns Hopkins) teaches eighteenth-century British literature and philosophy, feminist theory, and critical theory. Her book, Ingenuous Subjection: Power and Compliance in the Eighteenth-Century Domestic Novel (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2005), argues that eighteenth-century British domestic novels and social contract theorists represent compliance as an explicitly political practice. She has published articles on Frances Burney, Charlotte Lennox, Eliza Haywood, and John Locke in ELH, The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation, and Eighteenth-Century Studies. She is co-editor of the Fall 2007 issue of The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation on the topic “Empiricism, Substance, Narrative.” Her current book project explores subject-object relations in eighteenth-century empirical philosophy, pornography, and the novel.
