Bunraku, Japan's centuries-old form of puppet theater, combines three distinct and highly refined artistic disciplines: joruri, or ballad narration, shamisen instrumental music, and ningyo tsukai, or the art of puppet manipulation. Each of these skills demands years of intense training, with at least 25 years needed to reach omozukai, the status of primary puppet master. But bunraku's magic is revealed when the three independent components of movement, words, and music come together, evoking the wonderment and emotion that makes bunraku's ensemble work unlike any other art form. The National Bunraku Theatre of Japan —a company that includes four Living National Treasures brings this cultural event to the Midwest for the first time.

Program: Date Musume Koi no Higanoko (Oshichi’s Burning Love) (1773) and Tsubosaka Kannon Reigenki (Miracle at the Tsubosaka Kannon Temple) (1887).

Students are invited to a free lecture/demonstration at 2:00 p.m. on
October 8, 2007 at Northwestern's McCormick Auditorium in Norris University Center. Several members of the troupe will demonstrate their arts, and we will have the opportunity to see part of the performance in a smaller, more intimate venue.

The 2007 U.S. Tour is made possible through the generous support of Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, The Japan Foundation, Osaka Nichibei Kyokai, Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan, and an a group of leading Osaka-based corporations along with the strong support of Midwest sponsors including Anderson Japanese Gardens, Astellas Pharma US, Inc, Joyce Chelberg, Creative Communication Concepts, Inc., The Richard H.
