AAL 118 - 1/2/3 - 20: First-Year Turkish Language

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This introductory Turkish class is open to undergraduate and graduate students. This is a part of a sequence of 3 courses from Fall to Spring. The course presents the essential points of modern Turkish grammar, with special emphasis on the features that differentiate Turkic languages from other language groups. The goal will be to achieve proficiency in using the case endings, vowel harmony, basic verb conjugations, and nominalizations and participles in reading and writing. Through the use of communicative exercises in class, oral proficiency skills should reach the "novice high" level by the end of the first year

PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of the first quarter of elementary Turkish, or permission of the instructor.

TEACHING METHOD: Lectures on grammar are based on Robert Underhill 's Turkish Grammar. Besides the exercises included in that work, exercises of a more communicative nature are drawn from Suzan Özel's (as yet unpublished) work, Elementary Turkish: A Communicative Approach. Audio materials based on Özel's work are also available. Practical examples of how the language is used (excerpts from literature, journalism, songs, etc.) are brought in as warm-up exercises to be done as a group. The goal is to transition gradually to using Turkish as the language of instruction.

EVALUATION METHOD: Periodic quizzes, written homework assignments, a mid-term exam and a final exam are given. Class participation counts as a significant portion of the grade.

AAL 119 - 1/2/3 - 20: Second-Year Turkish Language

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This intermediate Turkish class is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who have completed first-year Turkish or the equivalent. Students with some background in Turkish may also qualify with the permission of the instructor. This is the first of a year-long sequence of three courses running from fall to spring. It will stress the features that differentiate Turkic languages from other language groups, and will complete the coverage of Turkish grammar that was begun in the first year, using the same two texts and additional sources as well. Audio materials, recorded selections, and in-class communicative exercises will further sharpen speaking and listening skills. Attention will be given to the areas of interest of individual students, in order to develop appropriate practical vocabulary.

PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of first-year Turkish, or permission of the instructor.

TEACHING METHOD: Lectures on grammar are based mainly on Robert Underhill's Turkish Grammar and Suzan Özel's Elementary Turkish: A Communicative Approach, with occasional reference to Geoffrey Lewis's Turkish Grammar. Audio materials based on Özel's work are also available online.

EVALUATION METHOD: Periodic quizzes, written homework assignments, a mid-term exam and a final exam are given. Class participation and attendance count as a significant portion of the grade.
