Affiliated Programs
For Northwestern
undergraduates, any of PAAL's languages may be taken with the goal of
satisfying the WCAS or Communication/RTVF language proficiency requirement.
Additional departments and programs at Northwestern have specific language
requirements or options within their paths of study, and these are considered
affiliates of PAAL. African Studies minors and International Studies
Adjunct Majors are open to students in all colleges and schools of Northwestern;
the remaining affiliated programs are in WCAS.
- African Studies
minors may satisfy that program's language requirement with Arabic
or Swahili.
- In both the major
and the minor in Asian and Middle East Studies, students are required to have
the equivalent of two years' classroom study of Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew,
Hindi, Japanese, or Korean, depending on the cultural/geographical
area of concentration.
- Majors in Comparative
Literary Studies must take two courses at the 200 level or above
in a literature other than English in the original language. Chinese
and Japanese each offer three courses of literature-in-the-language
at the 300 level; Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Swahili offer
three courses of literature-in-the-language at the 200 level.
- The minor in
Jewish Studies offers an option of 5 vs. 7 disciplinary courses
in satisfaction of its requirements to those students who successfully
complete two years of Hebrew language study.
- The International
Studies Adjunct Major has a two-year language requirement tied
to the cultural/geographical area of specialization. All seven PAAL
languages are represented in the areas of specialization.
Traditionally, some
faculty of PAAL will teach courses in other disciplines each academic
year. These courses are usually in the Program of Comparative Literary
Studies--African, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese literature in translation
survey courses, and focused topics and genre studies courses with PAAL
languages in translation. PAAL faculty may also offer courses in the
Department of Religion, junior tutorials, and residential college tutorials.
Currently, it is
not possible to get a teaching certification in any of the PAAL languages
within the School of Education and Social Policy. Also, at this time
none of the PAAL languages is offered in the School of Continuing Studies.
